Use Sterile Water for All Tattoo Applications

Many people seeking to have a tattoo do not understand the risks associated with it.  While most tattoo artists do follow strict sanitary procedures, extra precautions can always be taken.  What are the health risks involved?  The main risks can be skin infections and lesions.  There is a new bacterial infection that is being linked to tattoos and it causes skin lesions.

Two patients who had recently received tattoos, and are both from Seattle, suffered from Mycobacterium haemophilum  and developed rashing.  This usually only effects individuals with compromised immune systems which was not the case for these two – both had normal immune system function, the investigation report stated.

“Two people developed chronic skin infections after receiving tattoos at the same parlor,” explained study lead author Dr. Meagan K. Kay from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “The patrons were thought to have been exposed through use of tap water during rinsing and diluting of inks.”

Kay, an epidemic intelligence service officer with the CDC, and her team report their findings in the September issue of the CDC’s journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

The authors pointed out that tattooing is not considered a sterile procedure, is not regulated at the federal level and can be risky. And while the specific inks and colorings (pigments) commonly used to apply tattoos are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the rules usually apply only when cosmetics or color additives are involved.

The latest concern about associated infection risk arose in 2009 when a 44-year-old man and a 35-year-old man sought care for skin infections that had developed at the site of tattoos acquired at a facility in the Seattle region.

Lesion cultures and lab testing revealed that M. haemophilum was the culprit in the case of the first patient. Skin evaluations and patient interviews led the researchers to conclude that the second man most probably also suffered from the same sort of bacterial infection, although they technically classified his situation as a “suspected case.”

A follow-up investigation of the tattoo parlor revealed that municipal water had been used to dilute the ink during the tattooing process.

Water is considered to be a source for M. haemophilum. And though the facility was cleared of any safety violations, and no M. haemophilum bacteria was found in analyzed water samples, the tattoo operators were told to use sterile water for all future tattoo applications.

“It is important to remember that tattooing is not a sterile procedure and infections can occur after tattoo receipt,” Kay said. “Measures should be taken by tattoo artists to prevent infections, including proper training, use of sterile equipment, and maintaining a clean facility. Use of tap water during any part of the tattoo procedure should be avoided,” she explained.

“Those who suspect an infection in their tattoo should consult with their doctors,” she added. “Common infections can present as increased redness, warmth, swelling, pain and discharge.”

Myrna L. Armstrong, professor emeritus at the school of nursing at Texas Tech University’s Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, said the investigation serves to highlight the general risks of getting a tattoo.

“This is an invasive procedure. And there’s basically no regulation in force. Or very sporadic regulation. So as someone who’s been looking into tattoos and body piercing for more than 20 years, I would say that it’s really not very surprising that this can happen,” Armstrong said.

“So while I’m not being negative to the industry, I do think that the customer does need to be aware of the situation he or she is getting into,” she added. “Shop around, review people’s techniques, and make sure [you] really want to have this done.”       THURSDAY, Aug. 11 (HealthDay News)

Do Stomach Tattoos Stretch/Distort as you Get Older/or Pregnant?

Do Stomach Tattoos stretch/distort as you get older/or pregnant? (personal experience from women please!)?

I’m 23, female, thinking of getting a tattoo of a phoenix (black red and orange lines) and possibly some text on my mid/lower stomach. My questions are:

1. How does a tatt change over age (from my age to 60+!!)

2. If I get pregnant, obviously my stomachs going to grow hugely – what will this do to the tatt after I have the baby and lose the weight? (MUMS THAT HAVE TATTOOS - I would love to have some real knowledge on this from you!!)

3. How much will the colours fade over time? Many thanks! Please only answer if you have real knowledge from someone you’ve seen have a tatt over 10+ years – or have one yourself. No second hand info please. Many thanks!!

Almost all my high school friends got a tattoo there, and many have had different experiences over time. My best friends is a very small woman (about 5’4″ and weighs about 105 lbs). She just recently had a baby and her tattoo stretched a little but not a lot. I think as her stomach continues to tighten so will her tattoo. Now another friend of mine had hers done and she had a baby just over 2 years ago. Her tattoo is stretched and faded, but you can tell what it was. It depends on the person. I would say it would change and won’t look like it did before pregnancy, but it’s impossible to say how much it will change. Oh and most tattoo shops will give you a free touch up for life as long as you had the tattoo done at their shop (well that’s what they do here in CO).

What’s the Best Design for a Tattoo?

I’m 16, quite tall, skinny, and have dark hair (I’m a girl btw) I just want a small tattoo that is sweet and cute where do you think is the best place and what tattoo design?

Sporadic was right on the “somewhere that won’t stretch” part – so not your tummy or anywhere that’s likely to get fat as you age!! Have a tattoo somewhere discreet – only you need to know you have it! It doesn’t have to be shown off like a medal all of the time! The tattoo design would be up to you – something that means something to you!! I would say go for plain black – purely because black doesn’t fade like colours do and are easier to remove should you decide that you don’t like it later on in life!

Product Description

High Voltage Tattoo is a graphic perspective on today’s global tattoo culture by Kat Von D, star of The Learning Channel’s L.A. Ink and one of the most talented and popular artists working today. Designed in a style that is reminiscent of a handmade Gothic journal with its red padded cover, ornate typography, and parchmentlike pages, it throws the door wide open to tattooing culture in the way only an insider like Kat can.

High Voltage Tattoo traces Kat’s career as an artist, from early childhood influences to recent work, along with examples of what inspires her, information about the show and her shop, her sketches, and personal tattoos. The book goes deep into tattoo process and culture: readers can see up close the pigments, the tools, and the making of complex, even collaborative, tattoos.

With a foreword by MÖtley CrÜe’s Nikki Sixx, the book features images and stories about celebrities, rockers, pro skaters, and everyday citizens, including Slayer’s Kerry King, Anthrax’s Scott Ian, Margaret Cho, Jackass’ Bam Margera, David Letterman, and many others. It profiles and showcases the work of artists Kat has selected from all over the world, her interviews with people who have compelling tattoos and stories, and amazing images of extraordinary tattoo work. Numerous portfolios throughout the book showcase a range of relevant subjects, from the black and gray portrait work for which Kat is famous to a popular tattoo theme, such as the rose or biblical images. There is a knockout ten-page full-body spread of Kat—clad in a yellow bikini and seven-inch, rhinestone-studded red stilettos—that catalogs in detail all her personal tattoos on her front, back, left, and right sides—even her hands and head.
